Just kind of scanned the article, but from what I got from it I thought it was a bit unfair. Sure most of the stuff from there is crap, until it went on to deal with social issues. One also has to remeber that this was basically the first superhero at marvel after a long drought. The EIC at the time asked Stan Lee to make a superhero team after golfing with DC's EIC, who told him superhero's were doing great for the company. Also Stan Lee wrote like 20 books a month at the time, and often just wrote the plot.

It was a rant, a slanted rant (so he preferred DC to Marvel, awe shucks). But he had some solid points, too bad his bias is so obvious. You can't compare early Marvel to stuff like Watchmen ... it's just not the same genre. Comics of that era were for kids ... they didn't have to make sense they just had to be fun and have a sense of adventure. The dopey nerds who wrote letters trying to find real world rationalizations for the weak science mostly just wanted to get their names in print on the letters page. If they were serious, well ... LOSERS.

I mean, this was the guy in charge ... the consumate salesman ... Stan Lee ... the more outrageous he could be the more he liked it.


The funny thing is, it was all the guys that came after that loved the stuff when they were kids ... who refined it and defined it anew ... Who reinvented it and revitalized it ... who made it COOL ... Who made it art. Can't deny that.
